Forget basic resolutions like reading a book a week or running an 8 minute mile. Here are six resolutions you can make and achieve in 2021:
Relearn small talk
After 8 months of living like castaways on a deserted island in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, it’s understandable to be a little rusty in the small talk department. Brush up on casual chit chat subjects like the weather and practice a few new answers to the question How’s your day going? so you can be ready for the return of empty conversations with strangers.
Do some squats
Not a lot – just some. On top of gyms and fitness classes, inadvertent forms of exercising like walking around the mall (or dodging Karen at the office, am I right?) have been nixed for nearly a year. Plenty of people did not get that Hot Girl Summer body this year. Personally, I am atrophied. Resolve to be okay with easing back into a fitness routine.
Download a maintenance software
If remote work is here to stay, personal computers will be taking on a lot more responsibility than streaming and shopping. A basic software for cleaning out caches and old files helps keep your computer running smoothly and quickly. I use this free version of CCleaner.
Get back to brushing
You don’t need to admit it – everybody slacked on brushing their teeth last year. A good dental routine is important with or without anybody around to smell your morning breath.
Up Your Coffee Game
We all miss the cozy vibe and romantic potential of our favorite coffee shop. It may be hard to recreate the wonderful aesthetic, but there are easy ways to bring other parts of the experience home with you. First, take your coffee pot from 1996 and throw it in the trash. Or, alternatively, grab a bat and have some cathartic relief a la Office Space. Either way, replace that trash with a simple artisanal setup. For about $40, you can pick up a bean grinder, french press, and milk frother. Add a bag of whole roasted beans from your local coffee shop and boom – you can make the perfect cup of coffee right at home.
